China Nude Beach Problems

China's one and only nudist beach lies on Da Dong Hai (Great East Sea) beach, just only three kilometers from the popular resort of Sanya, where it has become increasingly common to see groups of people chatting and playing cards in the nude at the far end of the beach.
Although the fact that China's rulers are able to tolerate some level of public social nudity is cause for optimism, there may be trouble ahead. The authorities are concerned that there is no signpost to inform tourists that the area is for nudists, and there have been reports of embarrassing encounters between clothed and nude beach goers.
Although the beach isn't yet under threat of closure, China is a notoriously restrictive society, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the new leadership doesn't decide on a heavy handed solution to this situation.

Yet another beach closure due to "fake naturist" behaviour

The Department of Natural Resources in Wisconsin announced today that the nude beach near Mazomanie would be shut down on weekdays. The DNR said that the move was to combat the growing menace of so-called nudists having public sex and doing drugs in the woods.

My last three posts have been about closures and clampdowns due to the behaviour of people who I refer to as "fake naturists", ( ie. the sex, swinging and flashing crowd who have hijacked our movement.)
I'm really, really, disappointed, and more than a little tired of fighting against these people. Am I fighting a lost cause? Does anybody else care? Or am I doomed to become a solitary nudist, restricted to the confines of my own back garden, having relinquished control of the beaches and resorts to the fakes?
Let me know your thoughts.

Nude Beach Closures; Is Pirate's Cove next on the list?

Pirate’s Cove is one of the prettiest spots on California's San Luis Obispo County's southern coast, and one of the best nude beaches in the area. Up to now it’s always been a quiet, undeveloped spot passed over by the masses who head to Avila and Pismo.
That may all change in the next couple years as the county converts the area to a public park, complete with a paved parking lot, improved trails and restrooms.
Are we in danger of losing yet another fine beach?

Beaches at Fire Island New York no longer nude thanks to bad behaviour (and hurricanes.)

After hurricanes Sandy and Irene flattened the dunes on the Fire Island National Seashore, exposing beach views to the rest of the island, the National Park Service has decided to ban nude bathing because of the behaviour of some so-called "naturists".
Prostitution, voyeurism, exhibitionism, public sex and masturbation have all become problems at the beach surrounding the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Yet another nudist resource lost, and another stain on the character of the nudist movement, because of the actions of these perverts masquerading as naturists.
Sometimes, increasingly these days,I despair, I really do. . .

Sunglasses Can Damage your Health!

Nudists are well-aware of the need for caution in the sun, and every sensible nudist includes a pair of sunglasses in his or her sun-protection arsenal. Most of us don't need too much in the way of persuasion. Sun-glasses are a happy marriage of substance and style, managing to combine an important health benefit—protection from the sun—with a cool look. They're almost too good to be true.
Almost. But not quite. Because according to Dr. Sharon Moalem and Jonathan Prince in their book Survival of the Sickest (ISBN:978-0060889661), shading your eyes from the sun for a long period of time can actually increase your chance of burning!
Bizarre I know, but their reasoning goes like this.
The process of tanning is controlled by the pituitary gland, which is responsible for the production of a substance called melanin. When the sun shines the pituitary gland kicks into action and orders up more supplies of melanin. Melanin, which is the body's natural tanning agent, then pigments the skin to protect it against the harmful UV rays which cause sun damage.
The trouble is that the pituitary gland takes it's information regarding sunlight from the eyes. Moalem and Prince contend that by artificially shading the eyes with sunglasses for lengthy periods you fool it into thinking that the sun is less strong than it actually is. This in turn inhibits the production of melanin, making sun damage much more likely.
So by trying to prevent sun damage by wearing sunglasses, we could actually be promoting it!
How strange is that?
I should point out that Moalem and Princes' theory is not universally accepted and there are many in the medical professional who dispute the findings. Which, of course, only adds to the confusion.
So,what should the sensible nudist do? Ignore the advice. Or take it to heart and avoid the sun altogether? Or, even worse, stay in the sun but discard the sunglasses?
Thankfully there is a much more simple, common sense solution. If you're going to be wearing sunglasses for any length of time, just remove them for two or three minutes every fifteen or twenty minutes or so. This will keep your pituitary gland on its toes and ensure a free flow of melanin to where it's most needed.
It's better to be safe than sorry, and we nudists should act responsibly in the sun. Although the risk in this case is as yet unproven, avoiding it is easy, so why take the chance? It can't be worth hazarding your health just for the sake of looking like a rock star for an extra two or three minutes every quarter of an hour.
